I like WordPress, or at the idea of what it once was. Simple, easy to use, easy to upgrade, and a shining star to what open source development should be like. That said, I’ve been disapointed with the 2.7 series and late 2.6 releases. Mostly because of how badly the upgrade feature stopped working and put my other site out of commision. Here’s a few steps I had to go through to get it working again.

First off here is the SQL line for getting it to just show posts again:

UPDATE wp_posts SET post_type = “post” WHERE post_status = “publish”;

And I still haven’t figured out what’s wrong with the categories, but that will be next weeks project.

I’ve gone through a few dozen mice over the years. Currently my setup consists of my trackpad on my laptop, and my G9 mouse for my tower. I’ve gone through several Microsoft, Logitech, Razer, Kensington, and a random brands I can’t remember. Recently my Mom needed a new mouse, so my backup MX300 went to her. As a trade, she gave me a Dell Bluetooth mouse. It’s a very, very basic mouse with the now semi standard “extra” buttons on the side near the thumb of a right handed person. It feels about comparable to the old MX300, possibly a little more sluggish. However, I do find myself in my classic position of wondering why I need a mouse for what I’d use it for given I’ve gotten back to where I can play FPS’ with my trackpad. As such, I’ve decided to test RTS, FPS, Graphic Design, Programming, and an example or two I haven’t even figured out yet performance.

The following is released under the Creative Commons license. It’s a story I’ll flesh out later, once I do I’ll change the licensing, I just want to get a good base of the story. There’s 4 more parts to come.

Books filled the room from wall to wall, ceiling to floor. There was even a bookshelf on the back of the door. All the of the covers filled with real paper books. Amber couldn’t believe her eyes, this was the kind of thing you only heard about in school. There had been pictures on her tablet about the old, well, she couldn’t even think of the name as it had only been a foot note about the beginning of the original global government. But this, this was overwhelming, it had to be an allusion. The walls were so high that looking up made her a bit dizzy.

“Ok, where the projector? This can’t be real, these don’t exist anymore!” The words came out weakly and exasperating from Amber’s mouth,

“It’s not, but it does. Once upon a time they called them libraries. This is only a fraction of some of those long gone temples to words and prose. Before they were deemed an awful waste of space. Which predated the banning of most of them. Up near the top are the encyclopedia as they are a bit useless now. As one of these great poets said, learn from history or you are doomed to repeat it.”

The two of them just stood there for a bit, taking it all in.

“Wait,” started Amber, “you’ve read some of these?”

“Over half I think. The ones in English and Mandarin are ok, but I get lost in the ones in German, Gaelic, Finnish, and some other language that starts with an F. I spent the great majority of my childhood in here when it used to actually snow.” Mary got lost in thought for a great while. Amber just stared, gawking, and then starting to regain a bit of herself.

“But these things are illegal, how are you able to keep these if they are to be destroyed after being acclimated?” Amber surprised even herself with that question.

Mary didn’t skip a beat, “my Dad owns them, and it’s perfectly legal for him.”

“But that would mean that your dad would have to predate the war. There’s only supposed to be three people alive that old, and there’s no way your dad could be that old. The war made them all sterile at any rate. It’s very well documented that they had to wait until all the men that weren’t yet at puberty matured before they could begin to procreate and have any chance at our race surviving.” Amber was proud of herself.

But again, Mary didn’t skip a beat. “In theory, that’s true. And it’s a great theory, with a horrible implementation. My dad, like his three colleges, were different, special you might say. They were all given two side effects, one causing the other. My dad was given what amount to eternal youth, his body will not and can not age over the 31 years of age that he looks to be now. Mr. Saks, the museum curator at the capitol, has an infinite memory causing his brain to never be worse than it was at the end of the war. I’m really not sure how that helps, but dad says it means his body can’t figure out how to get old, so he doesn’t. Mr. Mud, the man we always see in the war films reminding us how bad war is, is similar to my dad apparently, but it has something to due with muscle density which is why he looks like he’s over a hundred years old. Mrs. Cobalt, the crow as my dad says, has saltwater in her blood, the saline acts as a preservative keeping her organs and mind working into her advanced years. They’re all similar, but slightly different. And as such, they’re all basically immortal is how I understand it.” Mary finally took a breath.

“That still doesn’t explain the amount of paper in this place, “ Amber quipped. Haughtily.

Mary sighed and started a new, “anyone who was of age before the law passed was allowed to keep their books and using paper. In theory that mean that it would die out at the end of the generation. Grandfathering is what they called it I think. Remember, that law happened before the war. My dad and his comrades were all just barely of age when the war broke out. And they are the last survivors.”

Amber’s wheels finally started to click in place, “but that means your dad is over 600 years old, at least!”

“This is true. And it’s why he and his friends only come out every couple generations, and mention how they are the descendants of the people they look like, when in fact they are those people. My dad got the idea from a book he read.” Mary stopped, looked at Amber, and really wasn’t sure what was going to happen next.

She soon found out. Amber passed out.

Dear TKS,

I woke up this morning, early, to go and vote in this election. Its a right given in this country and I like to flex it when I can. As such, I got ready, went to go outside and lo and behold, its raining. Is it a good or bad omen to have rain on election day? Normally when I leave in the morning a spot of sunshine follows me around all day every day, but not today. For today my inverted Eeyore was turned around and I got to experience the joy of walking and driving in the rain. Yes as I’m elated about waiting outside in the rain for an hour to vote, I find out that the voting booths have been moved deeper inside so we can all wait in the foyer of city hall. Alas, my adventure was not be.

Although, I quickly found out another adventure was planned for me: for the first time I had to wait in a line to vote. Never in any other election did I have to wait in a line. I got to my polling place around 6:50am, the poling place didn’t open up until about 7:05am. At that point the line was about 120 to 150 people long, with that in mind it actually went quite quickly only taking about an hour to get the front of the line and cast my votes.

No matter the outcome, I’m glad I got to vote and I’m glad so many people came out to vote. How was your day TKS?

Have fun!

Speaking of WoW Minis, if anyone wants to help me with my “wowhead for minis” project I could use some help gathering data on some minis and their abilities.

http://darrgotek.com/wow_minis/index.php (for the security minded, you can use this link, just add an exception)

Yes, you’ll need to create an account, but it does allow you to edit minis and their abilities and keep a checklist going of what you do (and don’t) have. Right now it really needs the ability data. The ability creation section is fairly straight forward, I recommend looking through a few of the abilities in there if something isn’t clear though (Specifically Flash of Light and Flight). In theory, the actual mini’s input are laid out just like their cards. If the input for minis or abilities isn’t clear please let me know and I’ll try to explain it. And yes, the plus and minus signs in the checklist do work.

This is a side project to my side projects and I tend to only do development and push patches Saturday and Monday. That said the goal is to have this up and running as “soon” as I can. If you have any questions please feel free to e-mail me or leave a comment here!

So, I played Fable II over the weekend, and got some time to sit down and finish it last night. That was one quick story. A little let down by the last “boss” but then I remember that this isn’t Chrono (Trigger|Cross) so my expectations should be low, and that make me feel better. I’m really hoping that the “open ended-ness” kicks in now and I can go around and start basically buying out cities…

While the story was very short, it makes for some fairly high replayability it would seem. I could go back this weekend and bust out a game and be evil this time, or go be a full magic user with horrible physical attributes (although I’d probably still put as many points as I could into health). More likely I will play the next game as a sniper, or even more likely a thief sniper and try to sneak around everywhere. That is, assuming I can put up with the paper thin story again…

Here’s a run down of this last week:

10/10 – BlizzCon
10/11 – BlizzCon
10/12 – Leveling my Druid
10/13 – Hitting 70
10/14 – WoW Patch, getting Epic Mount
10/16 – Rehearsal
10/17 – Girlfriend’s Grandparent’s birthday
10/18 – Bones West & Hanging out with my Grandma
10/19 – Church & ????

I’ve had 0 time to write or program. So it looks like Sunday will be the day to get caught up…

Edit: Missed Bones West and Church. But my Druid got the trash mace from Hyjal and I got quite a bit of programing done. I might even have new projects to showcase soon! Assuming I don’t do another raid tonight, since I haven’t really raided at all this year its nice to do it just as a fun thing.

So, I’m archiving and starting over. No one has visited many of the files on my web server in a very, very long time. As such, I’m archiving and deleting everything save my blogs. That includes old forums and projects that I’ve abandoned. Hopeful this will allow me to refocus my efforts and go back to creating products with actual quality and meaning.

The first of these projects is iPhoto for the web named “H1.R0″ that will allow me to show of my kitty (for whom the projects is names) much quicker and easier.

This should be followed by “The Game Checklist” and hopefully some UI upgrades around the site.

Update: I’m in the processes of starting over.
