star wars on dvd

Thursday, September 23rd, 2004

well, my friends and i watched all three movies in succession, starting at about 9:30pm. oh was it fun! it’s been on sale lots of places. amazon for example. the only draw back is that it’s the ’special edition’ releases. i guess i’m weird in the fact that i like the originals more. especially the lack of a jaba the hutt scence in episode four. without the scene it makes it look like he’s been out running and out smarting the gangster, which i though was just totally cool! it’s still worth the buy anyway though.

so, i think i’ll watch it all again….

update: i do have one complaint about the dvd’s. in ‘return of the jedi’ when luke and vadar’s light sabers meet in front of the emperors face, they get all like intertwinded. i don’t remember that in the special edition release, so i’m assuming that it was done for this release. even if it was done for the special edition, i know my original vhs copies don’t have it looking like that. why is it a problem? well, for one mel brooks made fun of how a lightsaber-ish weapon could get intertwined. and for two, it’s assumed that lightsabers can’t cut through another lightsaber blade. a couple of other things buged me (like hayden in the end of return of the jedi), but that one got me to actually scream at the screen.

sleep and blogshares

Tuesday, September 21st, 2004

Listed on BlogShares well, i didn’t know it, but this site was actually listed on blogshares in july. and the better news was that there wasn’t another earthquake of any size last night. thus i slept! rather well too. it was nice. at least i know my super power is still working. Creative Commons License This work is licensed under a Creative Commons License. the creative commons is kinda already what this site is under. well, it was, and not it is again i guess. eventually, i’ll even add badges back to the page, maybe.

no wonder i couldn’t sleep!

Tuesday, September 21st, 2004

ok, i have this strange super power…if there’s going to be a feel-able earthquake, i’ll either wake up right before it, or i just won’t be able to go to sleep. i’m like a dog in that respect really. i was sitting in my room, and all of a sudden, i was thinking there should be an earthquake soon. within like thirty seconds, it hit. twas odd it was, twas odd. so i went online trying to figure out what happened, where it was, etc. last time this happened, i found it pretty quick. so i was bummed when i didnt’ find it in thirty second. after looking for two minutes, i realized the maps hadn’t updated yet. but once they did, there it was.

the cool thing isn’t so much my super power of predicting earthquakes and not knowing that i’m doing it, but more the technological wonder that is reporting them by computer. i just find that really cool. really think about that for a second…you’re sitting there, and all of a sudden a computer knows an earthquake happened. then it goes about the programing that a human put into it and tells the world where the earthquake was and alot of stats about it. God did a good job with us human, yes sir. that was earthquake story, hoped you got a good chuckle out of it. and if i can’t go to bed, i’ll just be waiting for the next earthquake to help explain why i can’t sleep.

benefit of the doubt

oreilly: producers get information, but it's the messenger that takes the fall coming home from school i rewound eyeTV (i have the 200) to watch The O’Reilly Factor. to be honest, he slants right. however, when watching his show i get the feeling that he just wants the truth out there. beyond that, the main thing that keeps me watching the show is the benefit of the doubt that the whole staff gives.

for example, the “memo-gate” that has gone on with cbs and dan rather. i’ve been saying from the begining that it’s not dan rathers fault. rather, it was his producers. oreilly made a good point as can be seen by the screen shot that should be on the top-ish right-ish. mitchell is one of oreilly’s producers by the way.

what exactly does this bring about though? will there be a shift in the media as to who and what gets quoted? from my experiance, no, not really. but what it does do is make people question alot of the traditional forms of news. the so-called elite media (new york times, network news, washington post, etc) is what i mean by traditional. cable news stations and online blogs are all of a sudden becoming more and more popular. and with this latest blow to the elite major media, i’ve found myself asking if it was really a blow.

in my own life, i’ve come to a slightly different conclution. it’s not so much that i don’t trust these other types of media, it’s that i don’t have time for them. the real reason i watch fox news all the time is that it’s on when i have time to watch the news. for a long time prime time network news was unwatchable as i wasn’t home. but cable news networks are on all the time, so they were on by default, that’s all there was to watch! that was a few years ago. fast forward to now, and not even cable news is on when i want it. at that point blogs, newsflash e-mail, online subscriptions, and talk radio started to become a little more prevelant for my information needs.

part of that needs erupted in my rss reader article. when i wasn’t home, or when i’d be gone for a little, i could at least go back and read things quickly. bbc, slashdot, macrumors, these are some of the main news feeds i read. but sites like versiontracker have rss feeds as well! it’s all very nice. in some of the same way talk radio is the same for me. i can just turn on a station while i’m driving and jump into some news story. they’re always doing something!

are these so-called alternative sources gaining ground because of “lousy reporting” of the traditional media? i think it’s just helping their demise. what i see happaning is an evolution in information. the internet has created a whole knew way of communicating. blogs have created many many new news sources. and people are finding that while primetime news is on, they can be out doing something and still get the headlines later on cable stations like fox news. so, am i trend setter? far from it! now that i’ve seen what i’ve done, it makes me realize that i’m not alone.

point being? well, that dan rather (liberal or not!) isn’t to blame for everything that’s happened. and new forms of media are gaining ground based on information revolution and little else. more over, it’s all just food for though.

body worlds

Sunday, September 19th, 2004

over this last weekend my mom had ber birthday. which was kinda fun, we all went out to dinner (so, happy birthday mom!). but before that i went to an exhibit at the California ScienCenter called Body World.

the most memorable moment was actually in the IMAX presentation before the exhibit. at one point in time they go over the reproductive system, and instead of really “showing anything” they play a song while all the little cgi sperm make their way down the tube. what is that son you as? non other than, get it on. as soon as the song came on most of the theater erupted in laughter! even my aunt, which was greatly suprising, yet not.

in all seriousness though, it’s a great exhibit. we americans have gotten is last so to speak, but that just means they worked out the kinks before getting here. so if it ever comes to your town, or you’re in the LA area before the end of january, 2005 come take a look!

the video game revolution

Thursday, September 16th, 2004

pbs had a nice documentaary on The Video Game Revolution. and it was almost good! i did have to laugh at some of the wrong video games being displayed. like when they were talking about civilization I they had screen shots of civIII. speaking of meier, he had a great quote!

we’re on the threshold of needing to ask if video games are becomming too much fun. – sid meier

the go through the talking points of so called addiction, and there’s alot of ironic comments made. even more ignorant comments to my ears. but the good news is, it’s on the mind of society! or at least that’s the theory, as it is on public broadcast television.

media bias twords guns

Tuesday, September 14th, 2004

Hillsdale College has an article from one John R. Lott, Jr. the ironic thing is, he’s writing about the media bias twords one side when he’s bias tword the other. however, i lean more twords his bias though. it shouldn’t be shock to anyone who has read this site before that i’m a conservative, with some moderate tendancies. most of this comes from my wanting everything to be evaluated against itself and history. sometimes this is hard to do. as history doesn’t always provide a good backdrop for the toils of today. but in this case, there’s a couple of historical backdrops we can rely on. then again this little issue of gun controll leaks into some other areas as well. welcome to the new kitchen sink. something new, something old, and totally temporary knowing me. there’s been a little bit of a shift in site design and content. as to what, well, i’ll try to let that all speak for itself.

most of the design was from scratch. a few things have held over, like some of the built in stuff i just don’t want to mess with (as in, it ain’t broke! so don’t fix it). for the latest news on the site you can head on over to the todo section and check out what’s going on.

Chain of Command

Monday, September 13th, 2004

Chain of Command there’s a new book out titled Chain of Command: The Road from 9/11 to Abu Ghraib written by Seymore Hersh, who happens to write for the new yorker. so what’s so great about this book? well, not much in a way. i just finished reading it and the one thing i did come away with was that this guy isn’t out to get anyone. he really does just want the truth out there, which is nice to know.
