bad blogging – tools

Tuesday, November 30th, 2004

of all the topics that bloggers report on, the least common seems to be the tools they use. being the mac programmer and program analyzer that i am, and now being as good a time as any, here goes my list for the mac platform.

possibly the most important combo for code editing is the ftp client and text editor relationship. simplicity is possibly the most important thing for me. not to say that complexity isn’t needed at times. the best combo i’ve found is transmit for the ftp client, and subethaedit for text editing. transmit is just a straight ahead application, nothing hidden about it. subethaedit is very similar, it’s just a window with some text. the syntax highlighting is the best i’ve found, and the other fun part is that i can edit the same file from around the house, but that’s a different story. this does bring an interesting paradox for me: transmit can apparently only use so many external editors, so if i find a new editor i need to ask panic to allow me to use that other editor. but again, the good out weights the bad: transmit is 2.8MB, subethaedit is 9.9MB.

feed readers are an interesting conundrum. thunderbird has a built in feed viewer. mail is already read in it, so why not the news? pulpfiction is possibly the best pure rss/atom viewer i’ve ever seen. why have two applications when one will do? remember the point about simplicity? that’s the answer. thunderbird is an awesome application! i use it for all my mail. however, pulpfiction is just that much better. the interface, the speed, the archiving options, and most importantly, the searchability. thunderbird is getting there, and on any other platform it’s my preferred rss reader.

now to the second hardest to decide: blog editors. on any platform choices seem to be limited. ecto (1.x) is probably my favorite for any platform. however, mars edit is something of a new kid on the block, as its a shoot off of netnewswire. why use a blog editing application? reason one: no need for copying then pasting. reason two: everything is in the same place. for this particular post i’m using mars edit, however for previous posts ecto was used. in a month i’ll have my final evaluation for this month.

graphics editors. the hardest frontier. everything i’ve gone up to this point has been fireworks from macromedia. vector manipulation combined with bitmap exportation and straight png editing. best of all worlds. photoshop is nice, it just seems to limiting in some ways, and illustrator doesn’t export well. thus, fireworks has been my main graphics maker, manipulator, editor, everything. the fact that i like png’s doesn’t hurt too much either (even though explorer doesn’t like alpha transparency). where to go from here? well, currently i’m attempting to use the gimp for all of my stuff. not as elegant as fireworks by any means. it is open source, cross platform, and widely supported.

there’s the initial overview of what has been used. eventually, i’ll go into some greater detail about things at a later time.

weird connections

he can lose?: again, the rumors go around that jeopardy-boy might actually lose!

from a guy who shot for the moon, so the people that want to go there. nasa got more money, and thus they’re going to be able to be safer. why that wasn’t first on the list anyway, who knows. i kinda wish they’d take some money from the pointless things and give more to nasa. like drug enforcement. or my favorite, gun litigation actually has its own multi million dollar part of the federal budget.

speaking of the government, fox news actually did a nice little thing about the navy and it’s transportation services for troops and their stuff. thank you fox! and there was a little thing about ridge stepping down, most likely today.

and lastly, movies movies movies, on friday friday friday! and those poor people that get quoted too much. it’s a good point, when the same guy likes all the movies that creates a problem. the other point that was missed, is that it creates the illusion that there’s only one guy watching all these films and people will only trust that one guy. imagine the people that rely on ebert and roeper.

on a blogging note, i’m using ecto again. it’s very nice. however, i’ll also be using mars edit this week as well.

are you ready for some sports?

Wednesday, November 24th, 2004

this last week i’ve been talking to alot of people about sports teams, and favorite teams. what i always find interesting is why people like the teams they do. typically, it was for home town reasons. other times, for a particular player. still yet, one of my friends (a hockey fan) likes teams based on their rich history, for lack of better terms. i’ve decided to go through most of the major sports and figure out my favorite teams and why.

Baseball:

    The Angles
    The Dodgers
    Whoever is playing the Yankees
    Whoever is playing the Giants
    The Red Socks

Football:

Raiders – used to be in LA, still my team
Steelers – Awesome coach, my second favorite in the game
Tampa Bay and The Patriots are tied

  • The Bucs have a great coach, and the Patriots are an old time favorite
  • And then there’s Green Bay. How can you not like Favre?

Basketball:

The Lakers – very much a hometown thing, through thick and thin

Hockey:

The Mighty Ducks – hometown fun
The Kings – again, hometown fun

Soccer:

well, i’ll have to think about that one…i just enjoy watching the game

Rugby:

whoever i can watch, especially on channel nine from australia

i’m not a big sports nut, but i do like following football, and playoffs in any sport. eventually, i’ll update my list. like if i ever get an international channel to be on my tv consistently.

Hyper Active Hyperdrive

Wednesday, November 24th, 2004

“The X-43A Hyper-X experimental unmanned air vehicle flew at nearly 10 times the speed of sound on 16 November, eclipsing the world speed record that a Hyper-X vehicle set earlier this year, according to the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).” – Todays Intelligence Report

Some history on the idea of the project. And now, for some current information. The project is very much being compared to the SR-71 program. Which, is one of my favorite planes of all time. There’s some various information available all around the web. Some general history, info from the smithsonian, and a nasa photo collection.

Here’s to hoping that the technology they gain from this program will help jump start the aerospace program.

On a separate note, the scramjet and ramscoop technology don’t seem to help much with space travel. the whole there’s-no-air thing makes it a little harder. there is this crazy idea that space travel might help to unite man kind. but, above that, space is just so much fun! and then, the hyper-x really might by a hyperdrive prototype.

wizzard of ahhhz

Monday, November 22nd, 2004

the colts are having a pretty good season, and have a red hot offense. thus, i went digging to find out why and found this article. my favorite quote about their offensive coordinator is:

Age will almost certainly keep Tom Moore from ever becoming an NFL head coach, and that’s a kind of discrimination nobody ever talks about or fights to overcome.

however, it does go on to talk about the amazing things moore has done in the past. and he’s a cool fellow. good read for any football fan really.

farscape convention

Sunday, November 21st, 2004

so, i’ve been at the farscape convention, and it’s been rather fun the speakers have been awesome, and the concert on friday night from signal room was fun.

one of my favorite moments from the con was actually from the first speaker, writer/producer ricky manning, when he reminded people that we needed to support the troops reguardless of our political affiliation. it made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. after that comment though, the whole rest of the time was just fun and games time.

eventually, i should even have pictures up…

side note: as i didn’t take a camera, i’ll be relying on the friends that i went with to send me pictures (hint, hint) so as to put something up here. i did get to meet quite a few cast members and stuff, but no pictures due to lack of camera. oh well, next year i guess. stories, pictures, ramblings, they’re all to come once i become coher- sorry, my piano started drinking again, have fun!

biomimetics

Tuesday, November 16th, 2004

in the world of inventions nothing is as comicly awesome as biomimetics. velco, body armor, gliders, just a few examples. i’m just wondering, what else could we do?

welcome to the primetime ms. rice

Tuesday, November 16th, 2004

who’s suprised that rice was picked? it fits well with the whole theme of the bush administration: lets make america safer and go from there. she’s more hardlined than powell, with a little less respect from the world community, but, she has just as much world wide experience. actual time in world politics, she actually edges powell out.

now, there is a problem with is: she thinks just like bush. there’s one good thing about this: she thinks just like bush. the state department and the white house will be on the same page, but who becomes the check on this one? oddle enough, i think the one man that could really stand up to both rice and bush is considered one of the most partisan non-partisan men in washington: porter goss. but that’s a different story…

so again, the message is: welcome to the primtime ms. rice, and good luck!

go panthers!

Saturday, November 13th, 2004

NCAA Football Pittsburgh 41, No. 24 Notre Dame 38. need i say more?

the panthers are now bowl elidgebal and my man palko just tore it up out there with five touchdown passes. great game.

in other news, the team my little sister cheers on won their game today, i’m still waiting to get the final score.

now that it’s the end of the season, it’s time for me to brush up on my nfl-ness, and make my picks for the super bowl (patriots or steelers, either way i’ll be happy!). and basketball is even going on (poor lakers…). all in all, it’s sports time in this house.

and now for something completely arty

Thursday, November 11th, 2004

once upon a time, even i had some sci-fi art on elfwood the pinacle of which was a 3D space ships, that was up for all of a month, then was taken down, but that’s another story. i go back and check it out from time to time, as i’m a sucker for good fantasy/sci-fi art. both of which are on that wonderful site. my favorite artist is unfortunately not participating at elfwood anymore. i might just start stealing his sketch book and scanning things if he doesn’t. oh, right, i’m posting. at any rate, here’s some of the galleries i came across today that you might like.

Patrik Almqvist: a little old school in the elfwood timeline, borderline comic bookish, but it’s that borderline that give him a style that is just pretty darn cool.

Alton Lawson: you can tell he’s worked for wotc. however, his druid is just an awesome picture.

Nils-Erik Lindström : when you need something to chuckle at, look at didi.

and what elfwood list wouldn’t be complete without the founder? of whom, probalby can change shape knowing him….
Thomas F Abrahamsson: look familiar?

have fun with those. i’ll probably browse the library soon enough, as there’s some good stuff in there on occation as well.
