receiving raiders

Monday, February 28th, 2005

i’ve been trying to stay away from all this till march 4th, but here i go anyway (it was easting at me)…

well, with no end to kerry collins in sight (the raiders qb), i guess it was only logical to resign jerry porter. not that he’s a bad player, but if he and collins can hook up like they did at the end of the season, i’m good. although, if the rumors of the moss trade are true, that could put a little bit of a damper on the porter year, but not too much. will moss be a help? anyone that can catch and hold onto a ball will be helpful at this point. interestingly enough there’s another raider who started with the vikins and had his best seasons as a raider, rich ganon.

on another note, i still don’t think collins is the best man for the qb job (white guy vs. samoan, come on!), but with the help of these two guys (both of which are great players) i think he can come back to being a good player again, and maybe even win a super bowl this time. rich ganon is still my pick for starting qb. followed closely by tuiasosopo. but, to contrast myself again, i thought collins was a wonderful qb for the panthers when he was there. one of my favorite players in the league at that time.

as for the defense and woodson (same espn article), well, they might want to start looking for some more healthy talent. watching this year, it just seems like people are on to what he does. then again i keep having flashback of the super bowl when the raiders faced the buc’s and all i remember was screaming that woodson couldn’t do jack.

but, a new year is coming up fast and we’ll just have to see where it goes from here. go raiders!

good and bad: rice done?

Friday, February 25th, 2005

rice will be ok if he doesn’t find another team, says this espn article. i’ve commented on jerry rice before, he played on my favorite team for awhile afterall. the good: he might finally finish and let us all just bask in the glory of what he’s done. the bad: no more rice. i still like watching him every week, and i think if he really wanted to he could come back and play.

however, at this point, it might just be better if he became a wide receiver coach (or something close). start to teach the next generation what it means to be a real wide receiver! it will be sad to see him leave, but again, the longer he plays the quicker we forget how great he is.

over at questionable content todays comic (number 301) has a good comment that i think alot of people miss:

    February 21, 2005 11:16pm

This comic is not meant to advocate giving alcohol to underage people, but face it- probably 99% of the people who drink alcohol in the USA start doing so before the age of 21. I would much rather they do so in a safe environment with responsible people keeping an eye on them than at some stupid frat party where they may end up passed out, in the hospital, or bleeding to death by the side of the road.

personally, i see no point in drinking. will i some day? oh, probably, just to figure out why people like the taste. but even more probably, i won’t. same reason i won’t do drugs for any reason (i even refused pain killers durring/after a surgery). but, if you’re going to drink, please, do it with people that you can be safe with!

einstein@home

Saturday, February 19th, 2005

you can find my user stats here. einstein@home provides a way to use distributed computer to calculate the informationa nd simulations provided for gravitational waves. something i hope we do get a grip on in the near future. it might be awhile before i start getting results, but just in case you were looking for a new project or were bored with the others, here’s a new one that’s finally open to the public.

laughing out loud

Wednesday, February 16th, 2005

outside what many people consider my innocent little shell (turtle reference), i’m still very much a bass trombone player. of which, helps to explain why i like sinfest so much. it makes fun of comics and everything all at once. if you can’t take a joke about your religion, is it worth following?

the newest little gem i’ve come across is a comic called questionable content. if you start from the first comic and work your way through, it really is an enjoyable series. the charachters are rather intelegently done, and the plots are closer to real life than not half the time, which is a nice switch from all the melodramatic and fantasy web comics out there. so hey, check it out, and if you want a good one to start with try number 46. not only hot topic, but a certain evil coffee shop with an afenity for green is made fun of as well. have fun!

best football teams, well, favorite

Monday, February 14th, 2005

well, with the super and pro bowls out of the way i’ve decided to restructure my top ten football teams. part of it came down to who i’d like to win the superbowl next, afterall isn’t that the goal for any football team? part of it is players, part of it is history, and part of it is just gut feeling. the big section comes fromt he fact that i like the hometown team, which is alot of what drove me to the decision to make a new list of who my favs are, cause up until this year i’d never really thought about it. and, as a side note, my least likes team is the rams. so here’s the list:

  1. Raiders
  2. Chargers
  3. Steelers
  4. Packers
  5. Eagles
  6. Patriots
  7. Falcons
  8. Panthers
  9. Bucs
  10. Ravens

reasons? raiders were the hometown team oh so long ago, and it just kinda stuck with me. the fact that they now have warren sapp helps a little too. not to mention rich gannon, who i really hope comes back next year. chargers are now the closest team to my house and every year i find myself going to more of their games, and hoping that they’ll get in the big one. tomlinson, brees, they’re fun to watch as it were. i was totally wanting to see a match between them and my next favorite team.

the steelers on the other hand have my favorite coach. not a player, but a coach, weird eh? oh, and the one thing i love the most in football: defence. it’s just an old school, hard hitting squad that’s good and entertaining. the packers, well, it’s the packers! aside from brett favre, they’re not much right now, but given time i think the franchise will bounce back and become the greatest team in the nfc again.

i’ve like the eagles since cunningham was the starting qb, and that just kinda stayed, and has now continued with mcnabb. the patriots, my best friend in high school was a huge patrios fan, which rubbed off on me (yes, that was before they’d won a superbowl).

if i were to pick my favorite athlete of the nfl it would be michael vick. he’s just kinda cool, and i like to watch their games. the pathers are an interesting pick because i’ve just liked them since their expansion year. no special reason, i just like the franchise.

the bucs were one of the best (and then the best) defences in the league once i really started getting into pro football. oddly enough it’s the same with my next choice, the ravens. both teams magically found themselves in the superbowl with one real weapon, defense. and both walked away with a win, overwhelming the other team.

Recent Thoughts – Part III

life, the universe, and little green men

first up is the fact that all these global warming gasses seem to be being handled by mother nature. how you ask? phytoplankton. these little guys do the majority of carbon-dioxide conversion. another hole in the global warming theory? possibly, but at any rate, aren’t they cute?
mars is still in the news, this time with a new antena! if you want to find out more about the stuff under the hood, check it out at its official site. and you thought it was just the little green men that had antenii!
speaking of little green men, i started a new account for the boinc seti@home program. my stats are here. i’m still doing folding@home (my stats), team 3446. the nice thing about the boinc program is that i have lots of little units to work on, it’s nice. have fun, and i encourage you to do at least one of them.

Some Sports

more from those crazy germans

the computer junkyard artshow! the main page for the project is in german (luckily i can read it…), sorry to all those people who can’t. there’s some cool stuff on there and i encourage you to at least check out the pictures of everything. my second favorite thing on there is the multifunction lamp. far and away the best and most hilarious thing on there are the computer bugs. they’re just so cute and all!

back to the tech

one of the biggest buzzes around the internet and schools i help out with is the idea of sub-$100 laptops. there’s been several stories about the idea and the people that are involved. ranging from slashdot, twice even, to the bbc, and redherring. getting the world caught up, even slowly like this is better than nothing at this point.

Game Monopolies

the site that really made me think about commenting on this is here and here. i still hold the view that complete monopolies are a bad thing, especially when technology is envolved. however, from a buisness standpoint, it’s understandable. the good news is that without being able to use names from the nfl (or other sport), the companies that can’t use the names will have to be that much better. thus i can see these going either way. the only thing i hope for is that sports game prices will go down. hopefuly other people will take the espn/sega way and just charge $20. hey, a guy can dream!

Light Shows

a recap of the artificial light show is at LiveScience. however, if you want to know more about the basics and underlying tech, check out the official page. the idea that the ionosphere could create the lighting needed for an area, and having billboards in the sky just sounds fun!

Big Linux

germany is once again pushing forward with linux, and adopting it rather quickly in some cases. possibly the quickest transition to linux, it’s nice to see that it can be done. linux is a great alternative to something like windows, but why? well, in my experience (especially with how embedded these railway systems are), the reason linux kicks ass is its customizability. i’ve taken one programing class in all my years of programing and yet i can debug the kernel and build apps better than the people that have taken some of those wonderful classes. and with this system going up so quickly i don’t see how linux costs more and is harder to use/install/deploy than windows. it might take some more time in the planning phase, but then again, most people really do need to put more time and effort into actual planning of deploying hardware and software.
keeping with the linux theme, how about gaming on linux? some cool people have decided to mod a knoppix install (again with the germans!) and make Game Knoppix (ok, not the most original name). good gaming!

pointless classes – take one

Monday, February 7th, 2005

ok, personal education rant here. economics vs. finances. the classes should really be totally seperate and called different things. simply put, economics deals with a big thing, finances deals with little things. macro vs. micro. even micro-economics doesn’t really cover personal financial circumstances.

while i’m on the subject of weird and/or pointless classes: humanities. arts, random sociology, psycology, etc. when am i ever going to use those cources in life or in my major (which is physics, in case you were wondering)? i’ve taken them, and i can’t remember a thing about them no matter how hard i try. zero relevance on what i’ll be doing.

maybe i’m alone on this one, it’s possible. however, if i were alone, then my entire family (including my old fashion grandmother) wouldn’t be agreeing with me. so, who else has a take?! what other classes need to be gutted from the system?

as a seperate subject, the entire education system needs to be redone, with seperate tracks for different ways of taking school. but again, that’s a story for a different time.
