The Last First Last Stand

Saturday, May 27th, 2006

i’ll say this about X3: wait for it on DVD. However, if you must see it in the theater (as i did) please wait until after the credits. you’ll figure it out early on, but still, it’s worth it.

edit: so, after a week i’ve decided that i rushed to judgement. it’s not the best movie, but it did ok. if you can get over some of the annoying little bits it’s not too shabby. but, it is worth seeing on the big screen is what i’m trying to say. that’s all, i’m going back to my rock now and cleaning and packing.

the showdown – Ecto v MarsEdit

Friday, May 26th, 2006

over here is the preview of the show down. a year and a half later i’m starting to come to some conclusions. but, some back story first.

why a year and a half? well, i probably forgot. it was also around a time when i was getting really busy with stuff.

Winner: MarsEdit

The only other real competitor for OSX Blogging Software was Ecto. in my estimates the issues comes down to one of “why not Ecto?” as opposed to “why MarsEdit?” Both questions are valid and one exists because of the other. thus i’m going to answer the other other questions first, namely why would you pick Ecto?

Ecto is a great application. it has built in iTunes and iPhoto integration as well as a really cool Amazon search feature. it supports the same blogs as MarsEdit, and the guy that writes the application is a genius. it’s a very solid product. it’s got features up the wazoo! if you want to do it, you can. it’s the photoshop of blogging in a way.

for me, all that extra stuff is what makes ecto not as good as marsedit. ecto is over inundated with features that help to create a bit of a cluttered workspace. so, from here on out i’ll be talking about workflow and the untangibles, because that’s where this fight was won.

when you sit down and open up MarsEdit there’s a feeling of “this app is made for blogging and nothing else” that permeates everything you are doing. it’s interface is that of the old Mail.app, whereas Ecto feels like the new Mail.app. the windows to edit things in MarsEdit are very simplistic with very minimal (and OSX looking) icons. there’s the Title, the URL, and Edit areas for text boxes. four icons and two drop-down menus at the top. like i said, simple.

when i start to try to use Windows blogging clients i’ll be sure to throw Ecto in there, as i’m sure it will be near the top. however, when i’m using an OSX app i expect it to function with the elegance that i’ve come to expect from using my Mac and using OSX. unfortunately, Ecto just doesn’t provide that.

the other topic that i don’t really touch on often enough is multiple blog support. i’m looking at starting yet another blog for dev purposes. to clarify; i already have TKS and GA and am looking to start at least one more (probably under a different engine than WordPress) for my open source projects. both apps have it (multiple blog support), but ecto’s option to change what blog the article is under is at the bottom. this oddly makes things more cluttered in a weird way. marsedit has it just above the article edit area so it’s there but out of the way. for some reason the option bar at the bottom of ecto just throws me off and makes it seem cluttered.

what i don’t want people to think is that MarsEdit skimps on features, because it doesn’t. it has alot of features that you can read about on its webpage.

in short, MarsEdit has won this round for being a simple yet powerful blogging application.

Net Neutrality

Friday, May 26th, 2006

the best article i found was at Macworld: News: US House panel approves net neutrality bill. for more info you can go to the wiki definition of net neutrality. it’s a rather hot topic right now. an interesting article is over at yahoo, about a company that charges more for using other companies services.

here’s my take on it: would you want a telecom company constantly monitoring your calls so it knew how much “bandwidth” and “clarity” to give them? that’s basically what AT&T wants to do. this particular bill would stop that from happening in theory.

Yet another reason to not do drugs: Pulp Fiction. Not to say that it’s a bad movie and it doesn’t ccomplish what it set out to do. and hell, christopher walken is in it. then again, this is possibly the weired movie i’ve ever seen. and yet, totally normal. what it was is a miracle that i got through it.

Service Scrubber

Friday, May 19th, 2006

More of a personal bookmark really. Service Scrubber is something that I was looking for today to turn off certain services when using MarsEdit (which is winning this week).

it’s very straight forward and really wasy to use. if i had money and wasn’t a poor college student i’d donate all i could. nice app, very recommended.

The True Hands Off?

Friday, May 19th, 2006

There’s a site with some Save the Internet Frequently Asked Questions that I think are a good read for anyone. I’m all in favor of an openly free internet. I don’t mind paying to connect to the internet, after all it does take energy to get that information places. What I don’t want is someone else telling me what site should and shouldn’t load quickly and what technologies I should and shouldn’t use to get information (I use BitTorrent for Linux distros). some food for thought is all.

have fun and lets keep the internet free.

blogging engines

so, i have 16 e-mail in my inbox all asking the same thing: why haven’t you switched to typo yet? and that’s just from this week. i’ve been seriously mulling over this for about a month or so, life was a little too busy before that (as you could tell from my absence). i’ve slowly been compiling a list…

  1. Resource Management
    • From all the tests I’ve done with Typo on my own systems Typo can end up taking over 132mb worth of resources. Memory leak?
    • the database seems a little inefficient in what it does and doesn’t make room for
  2. Install
    • even on a Ruby-friendly server like TextDrive (which is where this is hosted as of right now) install is a semi-pain. However, this is most likely due to the newness of Ruby.
  3. Documentation
    • Again, it’s new, but at the same time alot of the why’s and how’s just don’t meet what I want
    • On the same lines the “why is this happening?” questions seems to be met with a bit of disdain and a Learn2Ruby type answer. A community is quite important, and I’ll touch on that in a moment
  4. The Community
    • there’s a bit of a “we’re better than you” type thing going on with ruby these days. people can tell me i doesn’t exists till they’re blue in the face, and it’s not an argument i’m going to get into.
Some of the reasons I like, and keep looking at, typo

  • there’s a bit of over fanaticism that parallels some of the previously mentioned attitudes. and that’s comming from a mac user, go fig. i love the enthusiasm and that’s one of the reasons i’m even looking into this project.
  • supposed flexibility of ruby. from what i can see it is almost as flexible and easy to use once it’s going as everyone says
  • it’s the next new language, and given that i’m investing some time into C# these days, i might as well invest in Ruby as well
  • spam filtering – from what i can tell it’s pretty damn good

so, what’s the point?! the point is that i haven’t written it off just yet. i really want to try one of the RoR blogging apps. but WordPress is just so awesome and does what I need it to for now. in the future i do have plans to move to something more “modern” than wordpress, however PHP is just such an awesome stable language that it may be some time before my main blog gets moved over.

basically to all my coding friends who are waiting for me to switch to use me as a barometer try looking at arko.net for what can be done. it’s nice, it’s elegant, and it’s fairly quick. and if that’s what it’s got going for it then i’ll be keeping a very close on eye on things. hope that answers some questions, comments should be working now, so please let me know if there’s more questions so i can make a post later on it.

Speaking of BitTorrent BitTorrent

Thursday, May 18th, 2006

Batman Begins something new. Warner Bros is going to try using BitTorrent to get things up and running smoothly. Seems like if you can’t beat them join them type thing to me. I’m all for it personally. Seems like a good idea and lots of fun.

Samurai Laboratory Clones with Power?

Wednesday, May 17th, 2006

The Power of the Dark Crystal is the sequel to The Dark Crystal! I’ll let the article explain everything else. I’ve had this in my list of things to comment on but everything I wrote seemed to be inadequate. Thus, here it is, almost comment-less. I wonder if there will be a midnight showing…

forbidden? I’ll forbid you!

412 Forbidden access disabling — this is more of a note for myself than anything else. I was having some issues with profiles.pyroturtle.com and getting the guild info to update. but given that today was my fluke day off this week, i decided to get some coding done.

If I have time later I’ll try to get the alphas of iToDo (based on checkbox) and Storms (based on brainstorm) up and going. both are very basic on the top, but can provide users with some very powerful options. much like mod_security and apache. how’s that for a tie in?
