text editors meet big files

Friday, December 29th, 2006

textmate and subethaedit square off again…this time with the biggest file i could create on demand: a recursive listing of my home directory.

text editors – textmate in perspective

Friday, December 22nd, 2006

for the record i use subethaedit for basically everything. bbedit is too “bare bones” for me at times, and textmate doesn’t have te syntax highlighting i want for what i’m currently doing. however, any of these are better than the entire windows text editing for development world. textmate might win out if it had the same reverence for php/html and it does for ruby/html, but since i use mostly php, i’ll stick with subethaedit for now. the other “annoyance” i was having with bbedit and textmate was how slow it was with larger files, subethaedit seems to just zip along with my 30mb sql files, but textmate acted like a salt particle through molasses and bbedit was only slightly better. and strike three for textmate came with not being able to handle hebrew very well. however, if anyone can find a php/html bundle for me, i wouldn’t complain.

edit: ok, apparently i wasn’t the only one with the html/php issue. i think that makes me feel better…anywho, i’ll be giving textmate a better run through now that it has the feature that it needed.

web coding rant

Friday, December 22nd, 2006

so, i’ve decided that the web needs to become vector based. i know it’s moving there, but where it is *now* is bugging the snot out of me! trying to get multiple columns to work, or even tables without table code is just a pain, and then there’s the “rounded” image problems…

it all started with…moleskin?!

so, i got a new theme (thanks andre :) ) called Hemingway. it’s interesting and i like it because it’s simple. have fun, break it, and let me know what you think about it!

Project Management

Tuesday, December 19th, 2006

Ok, so, I’ve got a few projects that I’m working on now. I figured I’d look around my computer to see what I could use to really manage this thing and make sure I have all the data I need at my fingertips at all times. Well, I came to a few ideas.

My first though was to just write my own. Then I realized that I needed some way to manage myself while I made an application like that. I’m not good with pen and paper, so that idea went right out.

Then I figured I’d use Mail with tons of rules and Address Book integration. A great idea, but still not totally what I wanted.

I still don’t have a good approach, but the Mail and Addy book approach seemed too simple. So I tested out Curio, and it wasn’t exactly what I needed. Great for brainstorming, but I can do that on the ASCII art level…

What was I to do? Well, in popped Microsoft. Entourage. It’s old, it’s clunky, and I have no idea how it works. However, I figure I’ll give it a try and see how much I hate it before I knock it. that said, there’s already a few cons for me…

1) Another application I need to keep open
2) Doesn’t integrate with Address Book by default
3) It’s a Microsoft interface from like 1996

The good news so far is that it seems to catch any e-mails that have the name of the project in it. Other than that, I can store all of my files in one place? We’ll see how this goes and if I’m running away screaming in a few hours…

what to do, what to do…

As corny as the title is, I’ve decided to “link to the world” my “plans” for my own todo application which is (sadly) greatly behind schedule. I know other people have some of the features I’ve outlined as needing to be created, however this project hopes to add a more “daily” feel to the said items. I understand that Google’s calendar now has something similar and that the new version of iCal will have some of these as well. However, trying to get a new feature implemented in those would be much harder than doing it myself in some cases. At least now I can have other people harping on me about this than just my sub conscience.

The List

Monday, December 18th, 2006

Ok, so after my post about bring productive i made a list of the apps that i tend to use…

Mail
iChat
Safari
Address Book
Xcode
Terminal
iPhoto
iCal

SubEthaEdit
BBEdit
CSSEdit
Vienna
MarsEdit
Adium
Camino
Accordance
Cyberduck
HandBrake
iSquint

…I may come back and make comments on them someday, but for now I think this list will do quite nicely. There aren’t any design ups listed because I’ve been doing straight coding for awhile now, but expect to see Adobe products on an updated list!

WordPress Plug-Ins

Monday, December 18th, 2006

I don’t use too many plugins, I’m just starting to really delve into the world of WordPress plugins, but I finally got permalink to work so I’ve set up a page to let everyone see what I’m using.

The one that I’ve been liking the most for the times when I actually need to log into the web interface has been WP Tiger Administrator. It’s a nice, clean, simple approach to the cluttered and semi eclectic design that is the default. Not to say that WordPress’ default is bad, this one is just better.

1 computer, 2 computer, 3 computer, (no) floor

Saturday, December 16th, 2006

i’ve discovered one really nice thing about finally separating my “work” computer from my “play computer”: i can actually get things done! all kidding aside, both my windows tower (darn VisualStudio!) and my powerbook do have games and i use them for alot of things. however, my powerbook is still my great little workhorse, all my apps that i need on it to actually get stuff done. my tower has all the games and general communication devices i need to survive when playing games.

once i delve deeper into C#, well, i’ll need to figure out a way to be productive in windows. this has actually been the most annoying part of learning C# and going back to learning some of the “finer” points of windows: i can’t get the applications i need to be productive. i don’t want to turn this into a bash windows post because it’s not. in all reality i don’t have anything against XP or Vista or any of microsoft’s products. well, maybe a little bit against word. if anything it’s a praise apple post for making such a great community to create such awesome applications!

if i make anything into a series it’s going to be the applications that i use on a daily basis. i have a screenshot somewhere of all the apps that i used to have open when i was working, it was quite a site to see if i do say so myself.

…and back again

Friday, December 15th, 2006

well, i’ve had complaints that i don’t write enough. and at once a month those complaints are true. so, i think in the mean time i’ll be turning this more into what i wanted it to be in the first place: my official bookmarks archives.

my storms project has hit a stand still while i’ve been leading my guild and working alot. however, now more than ever i think that project is going to helpful. it’s modular design will certainly help me out in the days ahead!

i have a few other projects under way that need to get done sooner though.: jsHerbs, critCalc, iToDo, and (oddly) forms engine research.

my mother was nice enough to give me a new printer (old one died). it works pretty well so far. i’ve been testing it out for the last few minutes and i’ve been quite pleased. now i need to get the silly windows box to learn it’s there…

other items on my todo list include a new design for the site, and an “official” direction for the site. something i’ve been learning the hard way is that i need to make sure that i have a direction to go and work in that direction, otherwise i get lost in the busyness of it all.

thank you for reading, feel free to try to leave a comment, and may the Lord shine upon you in this, the busiest of times!
