Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa Week 2
Sunday, March 30th, 2008Classicly Classic – The Sandlot
Friday, March 28th, 2008What makes a movie classicly classic? A movie that adds such a colloquial term as “You’re killing me Smalls!” has to have some reason for spawning such a phrase. Question one probably starts at asking is the phrase in and of itself is memorable, and the answer in this case is that it isn’t. The film and what the character of Smalls goes through is what makes the line so memorable. The complete dumbfoundedness of all the characters that he could know so little about baseball reminds us deep down how intimidating and frustrating new situations can be. Then again, the turn around when they all start to embrace him reminds us of times we’ve had or wish we’d had. Queue the camp out, “How can I have S’more of nothing?” followed by “You’re killing me Smalls!” Thus, the term about not knowing something about something you should was born. And in one instant a good movie was put into the halls of classic moviedom.
Some other time I’ll touch on the other things that make this movie such a classic for so many people.
